The offshore island of Kinmen will be holding a referendum on October 28 to decide whether people there want to have a casino. If the vote turns to be a “Yes” it will be the first gambling venue to be built in Taiwan.

Over the years, Kinmel has become a tourist attraction, especially for mainland visitors. However, the island has seen a drop in Chinese tourists leading Kinmen Council member Tsai Chun-sheng to bring to the table the casino debate in a move to boost the economy.

“Kinmen should develop its own industry. I don’t want our people to leave their home to become labourers elsewhere. It’s not good to leave your family here and find work away from home,” Tsai said after collecting 5,602 signatures to hold the referendum – 5178 signatures were required.

Meanwhile, anti-gambling opponents have been rallying efforts to campaign against the casino.

“We think once we introduce the gambling industry into Kinmen, it would draw in a predatory economic system that could cause an irreversible damage for the island. Gambling industry should not be our only choice for local development,” said Hung Tu-chin, spokesman for the Kinmen Anti-gambling Front.
