Competing in the ITF Super Seniors World Team and Individual Championships, held from 8th to 21st October 2017 at Lake Nona, Florida, Ed Sasker achieved his greatest sporting ambition by becoming World Champion thanks to not dropping a single set in his six matches and defeating the Championship’s top seeded Jaime Rene Pinto Bravo of Chile 6-2, 6-3 in a thrilling final.
A Dutch national, and retired physical education teacher, Ed Sasker has been a team member of the AK 70 at the Espelkamper Tennis Association (TV Espelkamp) in Germany for 10 years and, through his social and sporting connections with Paul Gauselmann (himself a successful veteran tennis player) he carried support from Gauselmann’s Merkur Gaming brand throughout the championship; displaying the famous Merkur Sun emblem as he took the world title in glorious style.
Proving that sport has no limitations in later years, Ed Sasker plays his tennis with undiminished joy and determination, attributing his success to a half-a-knee replacement performed five years ago and also to eating vegetables and taking an Omega 3 fish capsule each and every day.
He marked his world championship success by saying: “I am playing better than ever now and I have become No. 1 in the world. It’s very amazing, I didn’t expect it … it’s unbelievable!”
Paul Gauselmann was among the first to congratulate his great friend and club mate on becoming world champion. His company’s iconic Merkur Sun emblem that, for the past forty years, has been a symbol of good luck in the game was with Ed Saker on his championship journey and was also a reflection of the community spirit and corporate social responsibility ethos of the Gauselmann Group.
