Wynn Resorts announced Wednesday its Encore Boston Harbor casino will open June 23, the second to open in Massachusetts since lawmakers legalized casino gambling in 2011.
The planned opening comes after MGM ended talks with Wynn to purchase Encore Boston Harbor after public officials' concerns. Completing the deal would have forced MGM to relinquish the casino license it holds in Western Massachusetts, and presumably sell MGM Springfield, the state’s first resort casino, which opened in August.
Encore Boston Harbor sits on 33 acres along the Mystic River and outer Boston Harbor, with a five-star luxury tower overlooking the water and Boston skyline. The $2.6 billion, three-million-square-foot resort is less than five miles from Logan International Airport and minutes from major transportation hubs, with shuttles provided for guests at nearby commuter locations. It is the largest single-phase private development in the history of Massachusetts. It includes:
