MGM Springfield takes in over USD 212 M since opening

MGM Springfield reported gross gambling revenue in May of $22.285 million, a 2.14 % increase from the $21.8 million in gross gambling revenue the casino reported in April. The modest increase comes as the downtown Springfield casino launched new entertainment offerings designed to boost business.

The $21.8 million in gross gambling revenue in April had been a 15% decrease from March when the casino reported $25.7 million in gross gaming revenue, according to Mass Live. But March 2019 was a month with five weekends.

In its first 10 months of operation, MGM Springfield has taken in a total of $212.5 million in gross gaming revenue, of that $$66.9 million is from table games and the remainder, $145.52 from slots. The state taxes a quarter of that gross revenue in taxes. So the tax collection in May was $5.57 million. The total over 10 months since the nearly $1 billion casino’s opening in August stands at $53.1 million.

Our Roar Comedy Series continued to be the place for laughs in the region with several near sell-out performances. And we capped off the month with a fun new advertising campaign highlighting MGM Springfield’s ease of access, convenience and the place to go for spontaneous fun and excitement.”

The gross gambling revenues are still below MGM Springfield's pre-opening projections. Prior its opening, MGM told the state it expected $418 million in annual gross gaming revenue in its first year — or $34.8 million per month. The highest one-month take was $26.9 million in September, its first full month of operation.

Regulators at the Massachusetts Gaming Commission released the monthly figures Monday for both MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville. Plainridge, which only has slots, reported $14.8 million in slot revenue in May, up $14 million the month before but in line with the $14.6 million in slot revenue in May 2018.

This is the last month in which MGM Springfield will be the only full-service casino resort in the Commonwealth. Encore Boston Harbor opening on Sunday could impact the June numbers.
