As indicated by a "WARN" notice filed by the company that owns the casino, Del Lago Resort and Casino in Seneca County is laying off 1,077 employees.
The notice indicates that layoffs started back in April due to the coronavirus pandemic and that they are expected to continue indefinitely, 13WHAM reports.
The notice was filed with New York State in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN Act), a US labor law that protects employees by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 calendar-day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs.
State-owned casinos were not reopened during the four-phase reopening plan in New York, and there is no indication whether workers will be rehired at a later date if casinos reopen.
The notice classification is listed as "temporary plant closing."
The casino has sent this statement from Lance Young, Executive Vice President & General Manager, of del Lago Resort & Casino:
"As part of New York State’s efforts to flatten the curve, del Lago Resort & Casino was ordered to close March 16. Due to the uncertain outlook combined with changes to the industry as a result of the pandemic, many of our employees have been furloughed. Pursuant to State and Federal regulations, the company will issue WARN notices to all del Lago employees that are currently furloughed.
Further, for nearly 4 months, we have been doing everything in our power to responsibly reopen – prioritizing the safety of our team members and guests. Despite our very best efforts, including the development of comprehensive plans and procedures that outline how we intend to keep everyone as safe as possible in accordance with State mandates and CDC guidelines, we have not yet received information regarding when or how we will be permitted to reopen. We will continue our efforts and hope to welcome our team and guests back soon."
