“Panamanian casinos invested USD 1 M in COVID-19 adaptations”

Sánchez Ortega has said it is important that casinos resume operations, especially considering that this industry generates over 10,000 direct jobs, as well as many indirect jobs.

According to the head of Panama’s gaming authority, JCJ, casinos' safety protocols include the placement of physical barriers separating each machine and two meters of distance between them on casino floors. Moreover, guests will have their temperature checked upon entering the casinos and the use of face-coverings will be mandatory. There will also be enhanced cleaning and disinfestation of the machines each time a guest finishes playing, among other measures.

Annual wages of casino workers represent a cost of about USD 89.1 M to operators; and the sector generates over USD 500 M a year, of which about USD 150 M are contributed to the Panama State. The industry also invests about USD 45 M annually in the rent of hotel and shop locations.

Sánchez Ortega also highlighted the importance of promoting responsible gaming. "In the future, we believe problem gambling rehabilitation clinics should be created, and such initiative has been submitted by casino operators," Sánchez Ortega concluded.
