President Luis Lacalle Pou participated in the presentation of a plan to develop a five-star hotel with an integrated casino in the coastal town. The Minister of Tourism, Germán Cardoso, announced an international call for bids will begin on September 23 and will last for a period of 60 days.

"We have been looking forward to this development for many years," Cardoso said during a presentation held Tuesday at Rocha Athletic Club, together with local authorities, including Mayor Flavia Coelho. The complex would be located between La Paloma and Chuy, on the coastline.

Cardoso explained that the announcement came "following intensive work by the technical teams from the Ministry of Tourism and that the development has been awaited for many years."

The first step in the development of the complex will begin on September 23 with an international call for bids. The government wants to gather as many potential investors as possible. The tender documents will be available on the website of the President’s office and the Ministry of Tourism, and applications will be received for a period of 60 days.

According to Cardoso, a team of technicians and other Ministry of Tourism officials was created to prepare the tender documents. He said they worked tirelessly during the last few months to boost and develop one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Uruguay.

According to the Secretary of State, a copy of the international call for bids will be submitted for the consideration of the Mayor’s office and local community leaders, so the can evaluate the documents and make suggestions they consider relevant, as he believes it is important to involve local communities in these type of initiatives.

He also explained that applicants can submit a geographically individualized project, contributing their own piece of land, or they can choose to propose a state-owned plot they deem adequate for the development of the complex.
