Brazil: Treasury records a total of 113 applications to operate sports betting, online gaming

The key deadline to apply for a federal license to operate fixed odds betting and online games in Brazil ended on Tuesday, August 20, with the Ministry of Finance's Betting Management System (SIGAP) registering 113 applications for accreditation.

In the last 24 hours before the deadline, 52 companies - among them Caixa Loterias - submitted applications for authorization. Registration is mandatory and betting companies that intend to start 2025 with legal operations must register according to the guidelines and ordinances of the Ministry of Finance (SPA/MF 827/24) and pay a fee of BRL 30 million ($5.5 million). With the 113 applications, the amount collected by the Treasury will be almost BRL 3.4 billion ($625 million)

The federal government has committed to provide a response by the end of 2024 to bookmakers that applied by the key deadline. Any operator that applies after the 20th will probably start in 2025 (when all the rules of the regulation come into force) without a federal license. Therefore, they will be left without official authorization to operate in the national market and will be subject to sanctions.
