Pennsylvania gaming revenue hits record $5.89 billion in FY24, diversity and problem gambling efforts highlighted

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported a record-breaking year for the state’s gaming industry in its 2023-2024 Annual Report, with total revenue reaching $5.89 billion and generating $2.54 billion in tax revenue. The report underscores the growing success of the industry, which includes revenues from slot machines, table games, sports wagering, internet gaming, fantasy sports contests, and video gaming terminals (VGTs).

“At the same time as we report the positive economic impacts of legalized gambling, the Gaming Control Board remains committed to protecting our citizens,” said PGCB Chair Denise J. Smyler. “The PGCB ensures games are properly regulated and fair, and that tools are easily available to assist those who develop adverse gambling habits.”

Pennsylvania’s gaming operations now include 17 land-based casinos, 18 retail sports wagering locations, 12 online sports wagering sites, 22 online casino platforms, 74 truck stops with VGTs, and 9 fantasy sports contest sites, all contributing to the state's booming gaming market.

The report highlights the role of gaming in supporting nearly 16,000 jobs, with 89.8% of those positions held by Pennsylvania residents. The industry’s success has provided significant economic benefits, helping to reduce school property taxes, support agricultural industries like horse and harness racing, and fund various local economic development projects.

The PGCB also released its 17th Annual Diversity Report, showcasing the industry's commitment to inclusive hiring practices. The report shows that 41.4% of employees in the state’s casinos are racial minorities, and 41.6% are female. Of the $1.05 billion spent by casinos on construction and non-construction purchases in the 2023-2024 fiscal year, more than half — 50.8% — was directed to local businesses.

“The casinos have developed and implemented strategies to recruit, hire, and retain employees. These strategies also embrace work-life balance, encourage communication, promote team collaboration, highlight innovation, and accentuate workplace flexibility," said Mozelle E. Daniels, Director of Diversity for the PGCB. She noted that the industry's focus on talent development has contributed to its resilience and long-term success.

The PGCB remains dedicated to addressing problem gambling, with continued efforts to enhance its Self-Exclusion Program and raise awareness of responsible gambling. The program provides critical tools and support for those struggling with gambling-related issues.
