Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has officially opened The Rose Gaming Resort in Dumfries, Virginia. Located just off Interstate 95 in Dumfries, the milestone marks the launch of a new entertainment destination expected to boost the local economy.
Several Churchill Downs racecourse, state, and local officials participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday that brought out hundreds of people curious to take a look at the new facility. “From a landfill to a landmark, the Rose marks a new era in Dumfries’ 275-year story,” said Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood, as per WTOP.
The $460 million resort, spanning 175,000 square feet, features 1,650 historical racing machines (HRMs), eight bars and restaurants, and a hotel with over 100 rooms and event space. The site includes 2,500 parking spaces and 62 acres of green space, along with a seven-acre public park open to visitors.
“Churchill Downs Incorporated is thrilled to deliver a destination resort that will be a major economic contributor to the Town of Dumfries and Northern Virginia,” said Bill Carstanjen, CEO of CDI. “Along with our local hiring commitments and strong family-supporting wages, we are committed to continued investment in Prince William County as we are proud to do for all of the communities in which we operate in Virginia.”
The project has created around 500 permanent jobs, further boosting local employment. Moreover, the resort is projected to generate $35.5 million in annual tax revenue.
Additionally, CDI’s investment in The Rose aims to support the growth of Virginia’s Thoroughbred racing industry, with plans to add 16 more days of live racing at Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent, Virginia, during the 2025 season, thanks to the revenue generated by the new HRMs.
CDI has also made community support a priority in Dumfries, the company announced. As part of a partnership with the town, the operator has allocated $2 million toward designing a new community center. Additionally, through its Rosie’s Gives Back program, CDI has donated $400,000 in cash and in-kind contributions to local nonprofits since 2021.
