Essex's Genting Casino Westcliff, a historic landmark on Southend seafront, is set to begin a year-long refurbishment project this month to replace its crumbling roof and modernize its interiors.

The first phase of the renovation will address structural issues caused by Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) discovered in the roof in late 2023. The casino briefly closed in November of that year but reopened with protective scaffolding and a temporary ceiling in place.

The second phase will focus on an interior redesign to maximize the venue’s estuary views and enhance the guest experience.

“This is a very exciting project, which will transform one of Southend’s most recognizable landmarks,” said Stuart Green, General Manager of Genting Casino Westcliff. “We are combining necessary roof repair work with a stunning refurbishment that we are confident our guests will love.”

The casino will remain open throughout the refurbishment, with work scheduled during weekday hours to minimize disruption. Live events and charity functions will continue as planned, while the Waterfront restaurant will operate at reduced capacity before temporarily relocating to the casino’s basement venue, Prima.

Adjustments will include rerouting guest access through a secondary entrance and relocating slot machines further inside the casino. Temporary reductions in parking capacity and potential footpath closures will be managed to minimize inconvenience.

Owned by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, the casino has a storied history, having previously served as a seafront pool, dolphin aquarium, and leisure center before its conversion in the 1970s.

Genting, which will fully fund the refurbishment, aims to blend essential structural repairs with a modernized aesthetic to enhance the site’s appeal as a key local destination.

“We look forward to delivering an amazing outcome that will show off this historic venue to its full potential, making it a go-to destination for Southend,” added Green.
