Game suppliers operating in Denmark must comply with new regulatory certification requirements starting July 1, 2025, under updated policies announced by Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority. The move, aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability, mandates that suppliers file their own compliance documentation, marking a significant departure from the previous system where operators reported compliance on behalf of suppliers.
Under the new framework, suppliers will bear independent responsibility for ensuring regulatory compliance. Companies that create and operate games will also need dual certification: one for their role as a supplier and another for their business-to-consumer (B2C) operations. This dual-certification process is designed to ensure compliance across all facets of their activities.
Spillemyndigheden issued Newsletter 58, a detailed guide outlining the new requirements, including seven certification types and their applicability based on a company’s structure and activities. The guidelines also provide clarity on certification renewal schedules.
Businesses have been granted a six-month transition period to evaluate their compliance processes, identify applicable certifications, and submit their applications. Spillemyndigheden has warned that companies failing to comply by the July 1 deadline may face penalties or operational disruptions.
The updated regulations aim to reduce ambiguity in Denmark's gambling market by clearly defining the responsibilities of operators and suppliers. According to Danish Gambling Authority the new rules enhance transparency by ensuring that both operators and suppliers meet their independent regulatory obligations.
The stricter oversight is part of a broader initiative to create a more transparent and equitable environment for stakeholders, including players, operators, and suppliers.
The changes are expected to drive improvements in management systems, particularly for organizations operating in multiple roles. These measures, according to Spillemyndigheden, represent a "sea change in Denmark’s gambling landscape" and set a higher benchmark for compliance and fairness.
As the deadline approaches, businesses are encouraged to leverage resources provided in Newsletter 58 and seek professional guidance if needed. Spillemyndigheden has stressed the importance of timely compliance to avoid disruptions.
