Pennsylvania bettors placed a record $101.5 million in wagers on Super Bowl LIX, which pitted the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl on February 9, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
The figure marks a 20.4% increase from the previous record set in 2023, when the same two teams faced off in the championship game.
Despite the surge in betting activity, sportsbooks in Pennsylvania reported a loss of $6.53 million as most bets favored the Eagles, which won 40-22.
Pennsylvania bettors had the option to place wagers at 18 retail sportsbook locations and through 11 online platforms.
Online betting continued to dominate, accounting for 91.2% of total wagers.
The increased betting activity was consistent with nationwide trends. Ahead of the big game, the American Gaming Association (AGA) estimated that Americans would wager a record $1.39 billion legally on Super Bowl LIX, a forecast that highlights the continued expansion and enthusiasm around the US sports betting market.
The projected record comes as Americans’ support for legal sports betting continues to grow, noted AGA. According to the association's 2024 American Attitudes Survey, 75% of Americans support legal sports wagering in their home state, and 90% view sports betting as an acceptable form of entertainment.
