Oregon sports bettors set a new record during this year's Super Bowl, wagering a total of $8.26 million through the Oregon Lottery’s DraftKings Sportsbook. More than 456,000 bets were placed, with the average wager at $18.11.
“This Super Bowl generated more than $2.8 million in revenue for Oregon, the most for a single sports event since we launched sports betting,” said Kerry Hemphill, Oregon Lottery sports betting products manager. “Prop bets performed strong, and the Eagles’ overwhelming win was unexpected."
Prop bets were especially popular, with more than 1,100 options available. A total of 9,375 bets were placed on the coin toss, with 5,120 correctly predicting the Chiefs would win. Another 8,979 bets were made on the color of the Gatorade shower, but only 981 correctly guessed yellow.
The biggest win of the day came from a Eugene bettor who turned a $25 bet on a 13-leg multi-sport parlay into $49,370.
Oregon also saw a 9% increase in active players compared to last year, when 424,812 bets totaled $7.7 million.
The Oregon Lottery launched online sports betting in October 2019.
The increased betting activity was consistent with nationwide trends. Earlier in the week, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board announced state bettors placed a record $101.5 million in wagers on Super Bowl LIX. The figure marks a 20.4% increase from the previous record set in 2023.
Ahead of the big game, the American Gaming Association (AGA) estimated that Americans would wager a record $1.39 billion legally on the game, a forecast that highlights the continued expansion and enthusiasm around the US sports betting market.
The projected record comes as Americans’ support for legal sports betting continues to grow, noted AGA. According to the association's 2024 American Attitudes Survey, 75% of Americans support legal sports wagering in their home state, and 90% view sports betting as an acceptable form of entertainment.
