The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska has officially opened its expanded Prairie Flower Casino in Carter Lake, Iowa. The revamped facility boasts a seven-fold increase in square footage, tripling the number of gaming positions, and featuring Las Vegas-style electronic table games.
Additionally, the property introduces a new sportsbook. Unlike casinos based in neighboring Nebraska, Prairie Flower Casino’s sportsbook can take wagers on Nebraska sports teams when they play at home, offering it a competitive advantage.
“The expansion of Prairie Flower Casino is a milestone event for the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, as it represents a future that offers more sustainable funding for critical tribal programs that serve our members, like healthcare, transportation, job training, cultural preservation, and the delivery of meals for elders,” said Ponca Tribe of Nebraska Chairwoman Candace Schmidt.
“We appreciate the partnership of the city of Carter Lake, our dedicated staff who helped make this possible, and most importantly, our members, elders, and ancestors whose sacrifices and perseverance led the tribe to this celebratory day," she added.
The expanded casino honors the tribe’s history and culture throughout the venue. Named after Chief Standing Bear’s daughter, Prairie Flower, who tragically died on the Trail of Tears in 1877, the casino’s design reflects the tribe’s heritage.
The facility's street address, 1031 Avenue H, and the main bar's name commemorate the federal restoration of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska on October 31, 1990. Local Ponca artist Terry Taylor’s work will also be displayed inside.
"With hundreds of new slot machines, expanded dining options, a sportsbook, and electronic table games like blackjack, roulette, poker, and craps, the expanded casino will offer an unparalleled entertainment experience in a boutique gaming atmosphere,” said Ernie Dellalverson, General Manager of Prairie Flower Casino.
The expanded facility will operate 24/7, while the original casino, which opened in 2018, will transition to administrative space.
Prairie Flower Casino has contributed over $4.6 million to Carter Lake for police, fire, and community improvements. The Ponca Tribe also invested millions to prevent stormwater flooding on Avenue H, protecting both city and private properties.
