The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has announced a series of stringent regulations aimed at curbing underage gambling and increasing oversight in the industry. The new measures, which include a complete ban on individuals under 18 participating in gambling activities, were introduced during a regulatory sensitization workshop in Mangochi.
MAGLA Director General Racheal Mijiga highlighted the necessity of safeguarding minors from gambling-related harm, warning that violations would carry significant financial penalties. The announcement was made in front of operators, industry experts, and media representatives.
"We must protect our youth from the serious social and psychological risks that gambling poses. That is why the new regulations are clear, anyone found entertaining children under the age of 18 to participate in gambling activities will face a fine of K20 million," Mijiga stated.
The regulatory framework covers multiple areas, including sports betting, national lottery operations, player protection, internet gaming, and advertising. One of the key initiatives is the implementation of an electronic monitoring system, which will require operators to integrate with a centralized platform to ensure compliance and enhance transparency across the sector.
Industry representatives have expressed support for the measures. Betway Chief Operations Officer Charles Phiri welcomed the regulations and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to adherence.
"We fully welcome these developments. Betway is committed to complying with the new regulations, and we will ensure our staff is thoroughly trained on the new rules," Phiri said.
MAGLA is also encouraging gambling operators to take an active role in educating the public, especially young people, about the risks associated with gambling. Awareness campaigns will be a key component of the regulatory strategy, complementing the stricter enforcement measures.
