The New York State Senate has approved legislation to establish a Problem Gambling Advisory Council, aiming to strengthen awareness, prevention, and treatment efforts across the state.
The bill S.3632, co-sponsored by Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., Chair of the Senate Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee, was passed during Problem Gambling Awareness Month and now moves to the Assembly for further consideration.
"As we continue to expand gaming opportunities in New York, it is our responsibility to provide critical resources for individuals and families impacted by problem gambling," Addabbo said. "This advisory council will bring together experts, stakeholders, and advocates to enhance awareness, improve treatment accessibility, and implement effective strategies to support those in need."
The Problem Gambling Advisory Council will be tasked with assessing existing programs, identifying service gaps, recommending best practices for prevention and treatment, and improving coordination among state agencies, gaming operators, and community organizations. The council will also submit annual reports with data-driven recommendations to the Governor and Legislature.
The initiative comes at a time when mobile sports betting and other gaming options are rapidly growing in popularity across New York. Lawmakers see the council as a proactive step toward balancing industry growth with responsible gaming measures.
"Problem Gambling Awareness Month is the perfect time to reinforce our commitment to supporting individuals affected by gambling addiction," Addabbo stated. "This bill is an important step forward in ensuring that, as gaming evolves in New York, we prioritize the health and well-being of our residents."
