Sports betting in North Carolina hit a new high in March, with the state reporting a record $685 million in total wagers. However, despite the milestone handle, gross wagering revenue dropped for the second consecutive month, according to the North Carolina State Lottery Commission's latest sector report.
The March handle surpassed the previous record of $659.3 million, set in March 2024, by 3.9%. It also marked a 30.2% increase from the $526 million wagered in February 2025. Notably, March 2024 was the first month of legal online sports betting in the state.
Of the total amount wagered in March, $667.1 million was attributed to paid wagering revenue, while $17.9 million was classified as promotional credits. The commission also reported $3.2 million in voided or cancelled bets. Players claimed back $643.7 million in winnings.
This left $38.1 million in gross wagering revenue for March, a 42.7% year-over-year decline from March 2024 and a 31.6% decrease from February 2025. The figure also stands as the third-lowest monthly revenue total since North Carolina legalized online sports betting.
The monthly hold rate was 5.78%, with the resulting revenue generating approximately $6.9 million in state tax revenue.
Eight online operators are currently active in the state, including heavyweights like FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM. Operator-specific performance was not disclosed.
