Alabama lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow sports gambling in the state.
House Bill 161, introduced by Representative John Rogers of Birmingham, would allow betting on certain collegiate and professional sporting events as well as other authorized competitions in Alabama.
This is not the first time a bill like that has been voted on in the state. If passed, the bill would also create the Alabama Sports Wagering Commission as the rule-making authority, WAAY reports.
Currently, 20 states and Washington D.C. have active, legal sports betting. Neighboring Tennesse is among the states recently added to the list. During November, the state’s first month of legal wagering, more than $2 million of tax revenue was generated by the state. In December, it was just over $3 million.
