The Madison Square Garden Co. announced Tuesday that it would be suspending the construction on the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a release announcing that the company’s board has approved the spin-off of its entertainment businesses from its sports businesses, there was also provided an update on the state-of-the-art entertainment complex just off the Strip.
The company says that due to the global effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, there have been “significant impediments” to the project that are out of the company’s control. This includes disruptions in the supply chain for materials necessary to build the unique structure.
MSG Co. has decided, as a consequence of the crisis, to temporarily suspend construction over the next two weeks. The delay has forced the company to push back the completion to a date later than 2021. According to a company spokesperson, no additional information is being released on an updated completion date, KSNV reports.
“The Company remains committed to building a state-of-the-art venue in Las Vegas and looks forward to quickly and efficiently resuming construction as soon as practicable,” MSG Co. said in a statement.
Construction on the estimated $1.5 to $1.7 billion project behind The Venetian Resort began in September of 2018.
