International Game Technology (IGT) has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near and long-term targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. SBTi has also approved IGT's commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by the year 2050.

The company’s near-term target involves reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, from 2019 levels. The company also aims to decrease absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% within the same timeframe.

In the long-term, it targets to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050, from 2019 levels. In tandem, the London-based company seeks to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% and offset the residual 10% of emissions within the same timeframe.

To reach these targets, IGT said it will prioritize direct emissions reductions and actively work to neutralize any remaining emissions in accordance with SBTi criteria before the target year.

"Receiving this validation from the SBTi represents a milestone achievement for IGT as it reassures our stakeholders that we are committed to reaching net-zero GHG emissions," said Wendy Montgomery, IGT SVP, Marketing, Communications and Sustainability

"IGT's science-based targets provide us with a clearly defined approach to reducing our GHG emissions and mitigating the impact of climate change, all while ensuring sustainable growth for our business."

Last month, IGT provided more insights on its environmental policies when it released its 2022 Sustainability Report, detailing its efforts toward supporting global sustainability and advancing its ESG performance under its Sustainable Play initiatives.

The SBTi operates as a collaborative effort involving CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute, World Wide Fund for Nature, and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. Its primary objective is to establish and promote best practices in science-based target setting. Additionally, the initiative provides resources and guidance to facilitate the adoption of such targets and independently evaluates and approves companies' objectives.

IGT has been a member of the UNGC since 2017 and has deepened its association with the United Nations by incorporating nine of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals into its sustainability strategy, aligning its efforts towards these goals.
