Aiming to assist New Yorkers struggling with gambling issues, a new initiative was announced on Monday by the New York Council on Problem Gambling. In partnership with the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and the New York State Gaming Commission, a Voluntary Self-Exclusion Support Program (VSE) is being introduced, described as a free service designed to facilitate voluntary self-exclusion from all forms of gaming regulated in the state.

With this initiative, New Yorkers who identify themselves as potential problem gamblers will have the opportunity to voluntarily exclude themselves from using both online and retail betting platforms.

Upon contacting the NYCPG, individuals will be connected to a team member who will explain the self-exclusion process, assist in the necessary documentation to be added to the state's self-exclusion list, and provide connections with treatment providers for gambling issues and peer support.

The need for this initiative is emphasized by the data from a 2020 survey conducted by OASAS, which revealed that 4.4% of adults in New York are at risk of developing gambling problems, and another 0.7% already meet the criteria for gambling disorder. Those who opt for voluntary self-exclusion will be prevented from participating in any gambling activities throughout the state, including casino betting and sports wagering.

In a press release, NYCPG Executive Director James Maney stated: “Assisting those in need of help through providing care and concern is at the core of what NYCPG does, and the launch of this new program exemplifies that care and concern by breaking down barriers.

The new online notary services make it easier for individuals to complete remote VSE, while also connecting to one of our caring staff members who are knowledgeable about the process."

New York State Gaming Commission Executive Director Robert Williams added: “The Gaming Commission is committed to ensuring that licensed facilities operate in responsible and sensitive matters for those who need help.

"The New York Council on Problem Gambling’s VSE Support Program provides those individuals with the knowledge and resources to make the best decisions for their welfare.”
