Swedish lottery and gaming operator Svenska Spel has made the decision to start reporting "how healthy the group’s revenues are," that is, what proportion of the revenues come from customers with a lower risk of gambling problems.
At the end of August, Svenska Spel will report the proportion of healthy revenues for the second quarter of 2024, April-June. The figure will then be included in the group’s regular interim reporting.
According to a survey by the Swedish Gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, in 2023, 75 percent of Swedes gambled for money in some form in the past 12 months. The absolute majority have control over their gambling and these account for healthy revenues for the gambling companies. But there others who take risks and develop gambling problems.
Anna Johnson, President and CEO of Svenska Spel
"By reporting our share of healthy revenue and our work to counter gambling problems, we show that it is possible to run a gambling company in a sustainable way. It is an important step in the work to increase trust in the gaming industry in general," says Anna Johnson, President and CEO of Svenska Spel.
Svenska Spel’s accounting is based on risk models in the company’s own analysis tool Playscan. These have been developed in collaboration with Sustainable Interaction, which is an independent specialist in gambling responsibility.
"All serious gambling companies work to protect their customers and reduce the number of those who get into trouble. In order to increase transparency in the gambling industry, it is important to report the percentage of healthy revenue, which is a central part of the work with responsible gambling," says Erik Strand, chairman of the board of Svenska Spel.
A few other gambling companies with a license in Sweden today report, in different ways, the percentage of healthy or unhealthy income. For several years, Svenska Spel has worked for the gambling industry to agree on a common measurement method and definition of what constitutes a healthy income, the group said. However, the industry has not been able to agree on the issue.
Last month, Svenska Spel Sport & Casino launched a new sportsbook under its Oddset brand for its customers in Sweden. The sportsbook was launched in collaboration with Kambi. The launch follows an agreement signed in October 2023 between Svenska Spel and the platform provider, with both companies working to implement and complete a new sportsbook platform.
