SuperBook shuts down online betting operations in eight states

SuperBook Sports announced Friday that it has effectively shut down online betting operations in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland and Virginia. The operator, which has its flagship retail sportsbook at the Westgate in Las Vegas, is no longer accepting bets or deposits in those eight states.

"We regret to inform you that SuperBook Sports will no longer be accepting wagers, deposits or new accounts in Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, Tennessee, Ohio, Iowa, Maryland and Virginia effective July 19th, 2024 at 8:00 pm ET," a statement released by SuperBook read.

However, SuperBook will continue to operate at Westgate SuperBook in Nevada, and bettors there will be able to access mobile betting through the Westgate SuperBook mobile app, the company confirmed.

Despite the popularity of its flagship retail sportsbook in Las Vegas, SuperBook was unable to parlay the success into online betting. For instance, SuperBook accounted for .08% of the state's total handle in Ohio and .02% of the gross revenue from January 2024 to May 2024.

With Friday's announcement, SuperBook becomes the fourth platform to wind down operations this year. Earlier in 2024, Prophet Exchange, SaharaBets, and Unibet also closed their operations after failing to capture meaningful revenue shares.

SuperBook shuttering its operations in eight states means that its licenses become available in several states with a cap, in which regulators are at or near the maximum number of licenses allowed.

In Arizona, a tribal license is expected to eventually become available, allowing a new operator to enter what has been a full market. SuperBook was partnered with the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.

Arizona’s regulator can issue up to 20 event wagering licenses, 10 each to operators partnered with pro sports franchises and tribes.
