The North Carolina State Lottery Commission announced on Monday that sports betting in the state generated $33.8 million in gross revenue for August.
From August 1 to August 31, sports bettors in North Carolina placed wagers totaling $370.5 million, including paid wagering revenue and promotional wagering revenue. Of these bets, $333.7 million was returned to bettors as winnings.
The gross wagering revenue for the month, calculated as the total amounts received from bets minus the winnings paid out, was $33.8 million. With the state imposing an 18 percent tax on this revenue, the estimated tax proceeds for August amount to $6.1 million.
The North Carolina Department of Revenue will oversee the collection of these tax proceeds. The revenue report includes data from eight licensed interactive sports betting operators operating in the state.
