Freehold Raceway, the oldest horse racing track in the United States, will shut down operations on December 28, marking the end of nearly 200 years of history. The track, situated in central New Jersey, has been in continuous operation since the 1830s and has been a hub for harness racing since 1854.

The decision to close the iconic venue comes as track officials cite unsustainable operational challenges. “This was an extremely difficult decision, especially given the historical importance of Freehold Raceway to the local community and the New Jersey horse racing industry,” said Howard Bruno, general manager of the track, in a statement on Thursday. “Unfortunately, the operations of the racetrack cannot continue under existing conditions, and we do not see a plausible way forward.”

Freehold Raceway has played a significant role in New Jersey’s horse racing legacy. The Monmouth County Agricultural Society helped establish harness racing at the site in the mid-19th century, making the venue a staple for horse racing enthusiasts.

Over the years, the track faced several challenges. In 1984, a fire destroyed the main building, but racing continued in tents for two years until a new facility opened in 1986. In 1998, Freehold was acquired by a joint venture between Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Racing, which also owns Parx Casino and Racing in Pennsylvania.

The closure of Freehold Raceway is the third major horse racing track to shut down in New Jersey since 2001. Garden State Park in Cherry Hill closed in 2001 after 58 years, and Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing shut its doors in January 2016.

Bruno acknowledged the community’s support over the years, expressing gratitude to the employees, horsemen, and fans who have been part of Freehold’s long legacy. “We are incredibly thankful for our dedicated employees, horsemen and fan base for their support and patronage for so many years,” he said.

The final day of live racing and simulcast operations at Freehold will take place on December 28.
